Silhouetted tangle of boughs and branches.

I took this in Midgley in April last year - just a tangle of bare branches and a slightly over-exposed sky, but I like it!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/125s, 40mm, hand held.

Clouds and sunshine above Lighthazzles reservoir.

I took this on a morning walk from Blackstone Edge in March last year. It was one of those days that varied between bright sunshine one minute and rain the next.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/160s, 28mm, hand held.

River Greta with Blencathra in the background (2)

I last posted a photo of this view not long after starting my blog on 15th Nov 2014. In that photo you could clearly see the mountain Blencathra in the background - this photo shows it hidden under low clouds. In the bottom of the valley, beside the river, is the holiday village where we stay in Keswick - a perfect location (although it suffered greatly in the floods last Christmas, when the River Greta broke its banks and washed several caravans away).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/200s, 24mm, hand held.

Swirling reflections on the Rochdale canal.

I took this one late afternoon in June last year. It's just outside Hebden Bridge, at the point where the canal passes under the road via the tunnel in the picture, then on to Mytholmroyd. The surface of the water had just been disturbed by around 20 ducks, all heading noisily towards Hebden.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/10, 1/125s, 18mm, hand held.

Run-down barn near Stoodley Pike.

Today I walked from Mytholmroyd to Stoodley Pike, Todmorden, and back with my sons. We passed this barn on the way back - I love how isolated it looks. I always want to go and explore old buildings like this, but resisted the temptation today.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/6.3, 1/320s, 35mm, hand held.

Patch of sunlight catching the base of a tree trunk.

I took this one on the first day of our holiday in Keswick last year. It's in an area of woodland on the shore of Derwentwater, just outside Portinscale. This photo perfectly captures the high contrast between the shafts of bright sunshine and the dark shadows under the trees. I just wish I'd used a wider aperture and slower shutter instead of such a high ISO.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 800, f/11, 1/160s, 22mm, hand held.

Carpet of bluebells at the edge of woodland.

This one's from May this year at Hardcastle Crags. The bluebells were thicker this year than in recent years, very much earning the description of a 'carpet'.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f /4, 1/200s, 35mm, hand held.

Copper-coloured leaves and tree trunks at Eaves Wood.

I took this one in March this year, whilst walking along the top of Eaves Wood above Mytholm. I added a split tone to the shadows after being inspired by Mark Littlejohn, who uses this to great effect in some of his woodland photos. This enhances the contrast with the coppery leaves in the foreground.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/1.8, 1/250s, 35mm, hand held.

Reflections of clouds and blue sky in an iced-over reservoir outlet.

This is an outlet from Warland reservoir above Littleborough, photographed in March last year. I love the temperature contrast - the warmth of the sun against the cold of the ice.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/125s, 40mm, hand held.

Malham Cove.

This one's from early August last year, at the start of a circular walk from the Cove to the Tarn.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/125s, 22mm, hand held.

Moss-covered tree trunk.

I took this one at Jumble Hole Clough, between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge, in April this year. It's a lovely place, full of photographic opportunities - a rocky stream, waterfalls, old mill ruins, woodland. I'm aiming to go back and spend more time there soon - even the kids should enjoy clambering around whilst I take photos!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/4, 1/100s, 35mm, hand held.

Inside the Thames foot tunnel.

This was my favourite place to photograph on our trip to London in June this year. The tunnel runs from Greenwich across to Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs - I had planned to walk through it after seeing the entrance steps on a previous visit. I had a feeling it might be fun to photograph and I was right. We walked through around tea time one day on our way back to our hotel in Greenwich, when the tunnel was quite busy with cyclists on their way home. I decided to return a couple of hours later in the hope of catching it empty and getting a different type of photo - this is one of them. (You also get quite different photos depending which section of the tunnel you photograph.)

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/2.8, 1/30s, 35mm, hand held.

A section of moorland footpath.

This is part of the path that runs across Widdop moor between Walshaw Dean reservoirs and Top Withens. I took the photo on a snowy day in January this year. The colours in the path stood out to me amidst the surrounding white of the snow.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/100s, 29mm, hand held.

Late winter afternoon at Blackpool's north pier.

I took this one in late December last year. I love how the shape and textures of the clouds seem to mirror those of the sea.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/8, 1/100s, 18mm, hand held.

Shadows of trees across the path through Greenwich Park.

This London shot is from March 2015. It was a bright midday, hence the well-defined shadows.

Looking across Colden towards the New Delight pub.

This one's from a lovely summer morning at the end of June last year. I walked from Hardcastle Crags, across Heptonstall moor, down through Colden to the bridge, then along the river and back up to the Crags via Slack. I took this photo just after coming down from the moor.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/200s, 55mm, hand held.

Across the Calder valley from the approach to Stoodley Pike (2)

I posted a portrait version of this scene on the 2nd Jan this year - here's the panoramic version. I took the photos on a walk from Hebden Bridge to Stoodley Pike, Todmorden, in November 2014.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/13, 1/80s, 22mm, hand held.

Waves and layers of colour on Buttermere.

I took this on our walk around Buttermere in August last year. I loved how the light was bringing out the different layers of colours in the water.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/200s, 34mm, hand held.

Inside the ruins of Heptonstall's original 13th Century church (2)

Here's another shot of the lovely church ruins at Heptonstall, photographed in March this year. I think the bare branches of the tree under the arch fit perfectly with the tones and shapes of the ruins. You can find more information about them in my post of 30th March.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/2.2, 1/500s, 35mm, hand held.

Dovestone Rocks viewed from beneath Alderman's Hill in the Peak District.

Last night my son took part in another fell race that meant driving to an area I'd never visited before - the edge of the Peak District near Oldham. The scenery is stunning and I'm already planning to go back and explore with my camera. We were standing on the track that runs around the low edge of Alderman's Hill (where the race was held - you can see one of the markers on the wall) when I took this photo of the view across the valley. You can just see the corner of Dovestones Reservoir on the right. The weather was playing games with us again - hot sunshine mixed with heavy rain, providing dramatic lighting in the hills and sky.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/8, 1/400s, -1 step exp bias, 35mm, hand held.

Widdop moor viewed from below Gorple Cottages.

This is another one from our walk yesterday. We'd just walked alongside Graining Water (in the dip in the centre of the picture) and were heading in the opposite direction to this view, over Heptonstall moor on the Pennine Way. It was another typical summer 'weird-weather' day - one minute hot sunshine, the next dark clouds and a brisk wind - I think the photo shows that quite well.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/250s, -0.3 step exp bias, hand held.

Big hairy caterpillar crawling through grass.

My son spotted this caterpillar as we walked along a section of the Pennine Way on Heptonstall moor today. I haven't seen one like this for years. No idea what kind it is, or what it will, therefore, turn into eventually. We both agreed it looked so cute and furry that we wanted to pick it up; but it also looked equally big and possibly poisonous (probably overreacting there!), so we didn't!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/100s, 35mm, hand held.

Water flowing across stones on a Lake District fell path.

This is an upper section of the Wasdale valley path, featured in my photo posted on 24th May this year. At this point, the narrow, steep path was doubling as a little stream (not the easiest to walk down!). The light and colours in the water and stones really caught my attention.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/200s, 42mm, hand held.

Water droplets on a CD surface (4).

Here's another from my outdoor macro shoot in June last year. For this one, I sprayed a few droplets onto the CD, then tipped it to one side, so that they ran into streaks of smaller droplets. There's a mini 'rainbow' in each one, offset against the bigger one on the CD surface.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/16, 1/40s, 90mm, tripod & cable release.

Geese feeding beside Trentham Lake in heavy rain.

It had just started raining hard when I took this photo in April this year - it was bouncing off the lake and giving it a shimmery effect. Whilst everyone else was running for cover, the geese didn't even seem to notice and just carried on munching away on whatever they had found in the grass.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100. f/4, 1/80s, 35mm, hand held.
