Trees reflected in the Rochdale canal.

This one's from a late afternoon in April this year, between Mytholmroyd and Luddenden Foot.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/3.2, 1/250s, 35mm, hand held.

Duck on the canal, surrounded by ripples and reflections.

This one from April 2015 is somewhere on the Rochdale canal, near Sowerby Bridge - I can't remember exactly where! I cropped the original image to remove the canal bank and foliage, giving the photo an abstract element.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/125s, 52mm, hand held.

Trees and undergrowth reflected in the Rochdale canal.

I took this in April on the mid-point of a walk from Devil's Rock above Todmorden, down Jumble Hole Clough, along the canal bank at Eastwood, then back up to the Rock.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/4, 1/60s, -1 exp bias, 35mm, hand held.

The Walsden valley viewed from above Gauxholme.

I took this one this afternoon on the way back from a walk with the kids. We set off on the zig-zagging path up the green hill on the right (The Naze), then crossed the (very boggy!) moor beyond, taking a circular route via Gorple Clough.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/200s, 35mm, hand held.

Shadows from trees on the wall of an old canal-side mill (2)

I posted a picture similar to this one in June last year, 2 months after taking the photos. This image is a wider shot that includes the canal and more of the mill. For anyone who knows the area, this is the mill at Luddenden Foot that now houses Springfield Camping.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/100s, 18mm, hand held.

Reflections of trees in the Rochdale canal.

I took this in April last year, on a stretch of the canal between Mytholmroyd and Sowerby Bridge.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/100s, 24mm, hand held.

Swirling reflections on the Rochdale canal.

I took this one late afternoon in June last year. It's just outside Hebden Bridge, at the point where the canal passes under the road via the tunnel in the picture, then on to Mytholmroyd. The surface of the water had just been disturbed by around 20 ducks, all heading noisily towards Hebden.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/10, 1/125s, 18mm, hand held.

Evening sunshine on the Rochdale canal.

I took this one in June last year, between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd. I love the curve of the trees, the reflections, the greens and the light on the stone wall.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/10, 1/80s, 26mm, hand held.

Sunlight and reflections on the Rochdale canal.

This is a section of the Rochdale canal between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, photographed around tea time in June last year.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/8, 1/400s, 36mm, hand held.

Autumn leaves drifting along the canal.

This abstract shot is a long exposure of leaves drifting along on the surface of the canal, mixed in with the more static reflections of the trees and sky above. I took it in October last year in Sowerby Bridge.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 8s, 24mm, ND filters, tripod.

Rippled reflections on the Rochdale canal

I took this in November last year, at the start of a walk from Sowerby Bridge up to Norland Moor, via Maple Dean Clough. This is a section of the canal between Sowerby Bridge and Copley. I was really drawn to the vivid colours and lovely patterns on both the wall and water.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/100s, 34mm, hand held.

Reflections under a bridge on the Rochdale canal.

I took this in April last year, under a road bridge on the Rochdale canal in Mytholmroyd. The original image included the view out of the other end of the bridge. The view itself was unimpressive (a factory!) so I cropped it to create an abstract of the reflections disappearing into the shadows under the bridge.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/80s, 24mm, hand held.

Shadows and reflections on the Rochdale canal

I took this on a late afternoon in April this year when the sun was low and the shadows long. It's somewhere between Luddenden Foot and Mytholmroyd.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/80s, 22mm, hand held.

Barge moving along the Rochdale canal

I took this on a late afternoon at the end of October this year, just outside Sowerby Bridge. I had just set my tripod up to take photos of the autumn foliage when I saw this barge appearing from the tunnel in the distance. I liked the idea of getting a long exposure motion shot (making one of the slowest-moving forms of transport look super-fast!) so had to quickly attach ND filters and guess my camera settings, knowing I'd only get one chance at it. Happily, it worked!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 30s, 20mm, ND filters, tripod.

Shadows of branches cast across a stone canal bridge

I took this one in April this year on the Rochdale canal, just outside Sowerby Bridge. It was around 5pm so the sun was quite low, casting strong shadows and bringing out the colours in the stone.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/250s, 18mm, hand held.

Autumn colours on the Rochdale canal

I took this one this afternoon, just outside Sowerby Bridge. I knew it was going to be a very still, dull afternoon, so good for long exposures with a tripod to capture the colours around the canal. The leaves seem to be extra vivid this year, but it won't be long before they've all fallen.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/16, 5s, 55mm, tripod.

Shadows from a fence along the Rochdale canal towpath

I took this in April this year, on the canal bank between Mytholmroyd and Sowerby Bridge. It was around tea time and the sun was low, creating strong shadows from the fence across the path. I converted it to black and white to make sure these lines were the main focus of the image (the vivid blue sky and green grass were quite distracting).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/80s, 18mm, hand held.

Boats moored on the Rochdale canal at Hebden Bridge

I took this one on a walk along the canal bank from Mytholmroyd to Hebden Bridge, on a sunny tea time in June this year. The light and reflections were lovely and my son, Kai, was very patiently holding both dogs whilst I clicked away.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/10, 1/125s, 44mm, hand held.

Sunlight creating reflections under a bridge on the Rochdale Canal

I took this one on a walk along the canal between Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge one evening a few weeks ago. I love the patterns made by the water reflecting on the stones.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/10, 1/125s, 18mm, hand held.

Lock on the Rochdale canal near Mytholmroyd

I took this one on a short walk between Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge one tea time this week. Not a spectacular view, but a lovely picture because of the summer greens, blue sky and white clouds.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/200s, 22mm, hand held.
