Path curving through a field to a group of trees.

I've posted a photo of this path and group of trees before (21st Sept 2015), but from a very different angle. This one's from a different visit in May this year. It's a very photogenic view, just off to the side of Malham Tarn.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/320s, 35mm, hand held.

Little yellow flowers and rocks beside Malham Tarn.

I took this a few weeks ago in May. The kids and dogs were paddling on the edge of the tarn after we'd had our picnic, whilst I took photos. A lovely afternoon!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/125s, hand held.

Sunlight on a limestone hillside at Malham.

This hill sits just behind Malham Tarn (following the path in the picture off to the left leads you around it). I took this one on the way back to the car after an afternoon picnic by the water earlier this month. I stitched 2 landscape photos together to get the full effect of the sun lighting up the curve between the hill and the little copse of trees on the right.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/320s, 35mm, hand held (2 photos stitched together).

Silhouetted horses grazing on a Malham hilltop.

Yesterday we visited Malham again for my son to take part in a fell race. After the race we parked up beside the Tarn and had a picnic and a wander round. The kids and dogs paddled in the water and I played with my camera - it was a lovely afternoon! I took this one on the way back to the car when I noticed the patch of sunlight silhouetting the horses.

Cow guarding the path through its field.

This one's from our circular walk around Malham in August last year. There were numerous points that day where cows blocked our way and we had to carefully manoeuvre round them - almost as if their hobby was winding up walkers! This one didn't budge as we left the path to give it a wide berth, then stared at us until we were out of sight!

Fields and dry stone walls above Malham Cove.

I took this in August last year on the way back down Cove Road after doing a circular walk around the cove and tarn. The limestone pavement and cliffs of the cove are to the left of the picture; the village of Malham is to the right.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/200s, 34mm, hand held.

Thistle and grass against the sky at sunset.

This is taken at Malham Tarn - I was standing down by the side of the tarn, looking back up a steep slope, hence the angle of the shot. The sun was setting at the time, but the section of sky in this picture is actually opposite the sunset. I'm still not sure whether I like the thistle being in the picture, but I definitely like the colours and textures of the grass and the sky, so I'll leave it up to you to decide!

Sunlight and shadows across North Yorkshire countryside

I took this one in Malham in August this year. We were towards the end of a walk from Malham, along the Cove, up to the Tarn and back over the hillside above Cove Road. This view looks right across the Cove (in the dip between fore- and mid-ground) towards Goredale Scar (to the left of where the sunlight is hitting).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/10, 1/160s, 46mm, hand held.

Stile at the top of Watlowes dry valley, Malham.

One from early August this year. This wall runs right down the middle of the valley until it reaches the limestone pavement at the top of Malham Cove. On this day, we'd just walked up from there and were continuing on to the Tarn.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Little flowers growing in a gap in Malham's limestone pavement

I took this in August whilst walking from Malham Cove to the Tarn. There are lots of different plants growing out of little holes in the rock - really lovely and very impressive how they manage to flourish somewhere so exposed.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 800, f/11, 1/125s, 44mm, hand held.

Flowering thistle on the path beside Malham Tarn

Another one from my walk around Malham Tarn (which is just off the photo to the right) in August this year. I liked the splash of purple in amongst the greens and white limestone. It was a dark, cloudy evening so I had to use a high ISO as I hadn't taken my tripod (although looking at the settings I used, I could have reduced ISO somewhat and brought shutter speed down instead).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 1600, f/11, 1/250s, 24mm.

Dry valley above Malham Cove

This one's from August this year, looking up the dry limestone valley (named Watlowes) above Malham Cove, leading up towards Malham Tarn. We met 4 highland cows in this valley - I think they're really cute but we did start to worry when one of them stomped purposefully towards us (we had our dogs on leads). Fortunately it lost interest as we got further away!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Moss-covered dry stone wall surrounded by greenery

I took this one in August this year whilst walking around Malham Tarn, North Yorkshire. This wall was in shadows beneath trees, but the greens and silvery stone still really stood out.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 800, f/11, 1/125s, 26mm, hand held.

Path curving through a field to a line of trees on the horizon

This is very close to Malham Tarn - I took the photo in August this year. I love the simplicity of the tree line, the curve of the path and the one little tree standing on its own at the end. This photo is just cropped down from a 3:2 ratio landscape shot; I'd really like to get a true panorama of the same scene one day - using a tripod and merging a number of portrait shots (a more dramatic sky would help too!).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/160s, 29mm, hand held.

Late evening light on Malham Tarn

I really like this photo (from August this year), even though there's no obvious focal point. To me, it conveys the atmosphere and feel of the evening - the sound of the waves, the dimming light and the remoteness (there was no-one else around).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/200s, 22mm, hand held.

Old barn in an overgrown field

This little barn is just off the path around Malham Tarn. It was getting quite dark when I took the photo one evening earlier this month and I didn't have my tripod, so used a high ISO. You can see the smoothing-out effect of the noise reduction tool in Lightroom - it makes it look like a painting, which I think works well on this image.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 800, f/9, 1/125s, 34mm, hand held.

Sheep and conservation machinery near Malham Tarn at sunset

This one is from earlier this week at Malham. We'd been for an evening walk around the Tarn with the dogs and I wanted to hang on an extra half-hour or so to see whether we'd get an interesting sunset. There were lots of dark clouds but they were moving fast - unfortunately, though, they seemed to be thickening as the sun got lower, so I decided to set off walking back to the car. Typically, as soon as we walked away from the view across the Tarn, the clouds started to disperse and change colour.

At that point, we just happened to be next to this huge machine (no idea what it does, but the sign says it's Conservation Machinery!) and this group of sheep had moved to stand next to it. So I grabbed the opportunity to get a shot with the pink clouds in the background, just in case they were about to disappear again. I thought I'd probably end up deleting the photo (a strange subject - sheep, sunset and conservation machine!!), but I actually really like it. The contrast between nature and machinery is interesting; I also like the smoothing effect of the noise reduction I had to do in Lightroom.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 1600, f/11, 1/125s, 20mm, hand held.

Cows grazing by the river at Malham Cove

I took this one at around 9.30am this morning. We stayed overnight at Malham and, after breakfast, set out on a walk to Malham Tarn, via the Cove. Amazingly, we only passed 2 other people the whole way along the Cove and up to the limestone pavement. There were lots of cows about though - a number of them were lying right in front of the gate half way along the path, meaning we had to creep between them - I like to think they do that on purpose to frighten people!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/125s, 20mm, hand held.

Limestone cliffs at Gordale Scar

I took this picture standing in front of the waterfalls at Gordale Scar (near Malham, North Yorkshire) and looking straight up to the top of the limestone cliffs that surround them. I wonder whether this jagged shape made by the edges of the clifftops gave the Scar its name - can't find anything on the internet that verifies or contradicts this though.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/9, 1/400s, 18mm, hand held (overall exposure increased and sky darkened with brush in Lightroom)

Dry stone wall, fence and sheep, Malham

This is taken from the path between Malham Cove and Gordale Scar, North Yorkshire. I love the tones and textures in dry stone walls - they work particularly well in black and white. The main reason for taking this particular picture was the overall shape and pattern made by the wall, fence and the rougher grass around the intersection. In Lightroom, I had to adjust the green and yellow sliders on the grey balance to make the rougher grass stand out.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/13, 1/160s, 55mm.
