Snow-covered little tree and long grass.

Another one from a foggy, snowy afternoon in January last year on Roils Head moor, close to my home. I like how the snow has stuck to the centre of the tree trunk, creating dark outlines.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/200s, 26mm, hand held.

Whitby Abbey under a dark winter sky.

One from my trip to Whitby a few weeks ago. We paid the £7.50ish/person to enter the Abbey grounds and wandered around taking photos from different angles. On reviewing them, I thought this was the best, most atmospheric, shot although, frustratingly, it's not quite sharp if you zoom in close. Looks like we might be paying again next time we visit so I can get it right!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Weather-worn beach rocks (5)

I'm finally getting towards the end of my Northumberland photos from Aug 2013 - only a handful left to process now, and this is the last 'rocks' one. As before, I took this photo on Seahouses beach - brilliantly shaped and coloured rocks!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/80s, 20mm, hand held.

Foggy Whinlatter Forest

This is Whinlatter Forest, photographed on our holiday to Keswick last year. It's amazing how fast the scene changes when photographing in fog - from one minute to the next the visibility was changing. Unfortunately for me, wanting atmospheric foggy photos, it kept getting clearer!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 2.5s, 55mm, tripod.

Pendle Hill viewed from Hoof Stones Height at Black Hameldon.

Today I tried out a new walk around the moors above Kebs Road in Todmorden. I ended up at the trig point at the top of Black Hameldon - a stunning viewpoint! The weather was gorgeous today so I could see for miles in every direction. This particular view is looking across Burnley towards Pendle Hill - the steeper end of which is lit up in the sunshine. I'm not sure whether I was actually standing in Burnley (Lancashire) or Todmorden (West Yorkshire) at this point - either way I was very close to the border!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/6.3, 1/250s, 35mm, hand held.

Beneath snow-covered trees.

This is a little group of trees in the middle of Roils Head moor, photographed on a late afternoon in January 2015. I love how the fragile-looking branches manage to support so much snow.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5, 1/160s, 22mm, hand held.

Tuesday 23 February 2016

Winter morning on Whitby beach.

Here's another from my trip to Whitby a few weeks ago. This is looking north-west towards Sandsend.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/100s, 18mm, hand held.

Monday 22 February 2016

Abstract reflections on the River Hebden.

Another one from Hardcastle Crags, this time from March last year. It's a crop from a much wider shot. The effect on the rippled surface of the water is a mixture of reflections from the sky and trees and the sunlight hitting the stones on the river bed.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/200s, 55mm, hand held.

Sunday 21 February 2016

Orange leaves on a little birch tree in winter woodland.

Here's another one from my walk at Hardcastle Crags last Friday morning. I love these little trees at the Crags - they seem to hold on to their leaves throughout the winter, adding a bright splash of colour to the grey/green woodland.

I've desaturated all the other colours in this shot, to emphasise the effect.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/1.8, 1/400s, 35mm, hand held.

Saturday 20 February 2016

Pink carnation.

I got a lovely mixed bunch of flowers from my husband last week for Valentine's Day and decided to photograph some of them individually today. I think carnations are underrated, due to their abundance in supermarkets and garages - they're actually a lovely flower as, hopefully, this photo shows.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 0.8s, 90mm Tamron macro lens, tripod, natural light & reflector.

Winter branches at Hardcastle Crags.

Yesterday I got a new prime lens (Nikkor 35mm f/1.8) so this morning I headed to my favourite location (Hardcastle Crags) to play with it! I love it! It's sharp and fast, meaning I can get shallow depth of field and photograph in low light at low ISO - perfect for woodland shots. Here's one of them; the mossy greens are standing out beautifully at the moment, along with the crisp brown leaves of the beech trees.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/2, 1/400s, 35mm, hand held.

Thursday 18 February 2016

Colourful autumn trees.

These trees line the edge of a field just off to the side of Bacup Road, Todmorden. I took the photo on a sunny day in late October last year. Although the colours are gorgeous, it's the contrast of the blue-grey trunk and branches that makes the picture for me.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/40s, 50mm, tripod.

Wednesday 17 February 2016

Light at the end of the tunnel!

I took this one in November last year on the way up the hillside towards Maple Dean Clough, Norland, from Copley. This shadowy, overgrown path with the bright sunlight at the end had a really magical feel to it - if it was a picture in a children's book there would be pixies and fairies perched on the branches!

Unfortunately, as I was on a long walk up a steep hill, I hadn't brought my tripod, so had to rely on a highish ISO and some noise reduction in Lightroom to capture any detail in the shadows.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/80s, 40mm, hand held.

Tuesday 16 February 2016

Stream water splashing around mossy rocks, twigs and leaves.

I took this in March last year at Hardcastle Crags. I love the detail of fast flowing water - the shapes it makes and the way it captures the light. Processing this picture has reminded me that I should take my tripod and get some more detailed water shots soon - there's certainly enough of it around at the moment!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/640s, 34mm, hand held.

Monday 15 February 2016

Ferns and the base of a tree trunk touched by sunlight.

This tree surrounded by ferns is on the slope of the river bank close to Lumb Hole waterfalls at Crimsworth Dean. I was balanced on a rock in the river having taken photos looking up and down stream and was about to climb out when I noticed the lovely tones and patterns made by the light catching the ferns and bark. (June 2015)

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/125s, 18mm, hand held.

Sunday 14 February 2016

Colourful beach huts at Whitby.

I'd seen photos of these huts before we went to Whitby a few weeks ago and wanted to go looking for them. I suppose the photo itself is a bit of a cliche, but I doubt that many photographers could resist having a go - I certainly couldn't! A photo from this angle involved balancing on a steep, muddy slope behind the huts - I could see tracks on the ground made by so many others before me all determined to get the shot!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5, 1/200s, 20mm, hand held.

Saturday 13 February 2016

Moss-covered tree trunk and roots in woodland.

I took this today at Hardcastle Crags on a walk with my lovely friend, Hattie. We passed this tree on the main track just up the hill past Gibson Mill.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200,  f/3.5, 1/100s, 18mm, hand held.

Friday 12 February 2016

Sparrow snacking on seeds.

I took this in my garden in June last year, having set up my tripod on the patio and sat very still to wait for hungry birds.  I really want to do another bird photography session, but for some reason they seem to have got bored with seeds! I'm planning to get a new feeder soon and try them with something else, so hopefully some new photos will follow soon....

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/250s, 170mm, tripod.

Thursday 11 February 2016

Rich colours and vegetation at a junction of valleys at Blake Dean.

This is at the top of Hardcastle Crags where the valley splits - in the background of this photo you can see the Graining Water valley; to the right of the image (out of sight) is Alcomden Water. The 2 rivers merge to form Hebden Beck, which runs down through the Crags (just visible in the bottom left of this photo). This is a lovely spot in any season and is a great place to picnic and paddle when it's warm enough!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/13, 1/100s, 42mm, hand held.

Wednesday 10 February 2016

Puddle-covered moorland track reflecting bright, low sunshine.

This track runs between Cold Edge Dams and Top Withens, just behind Wainstalls in Halifax. I took the photo a few weeks ago on a late afternoon walk. I had just turned round to look back at where we'd walked and loved how the sun was lighting the whole path up.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/80s, 24mm, hand held.

Tuesday 9 February 2016

Abstract aerial view over the north-eastern estuary of Morecambe Bay.

This is one of the shots I took on my helicopter flight from Carnforth to Ambleside and back in September last year. This cropped photo shows the sands of the north-eastern estuary of Morecambe Bay, somewhere between Grange-over-sands and Arnside (I think!).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/4, 1/1600s, 18mm, hand held.

Monday 8 February 2016

Line of trees in a snowy field silhouetted against a late afternoon sky.

Here's another one from Roils Head moor in Halifax last January. It took it just after the sun set, but whilst it was still back-lighting the clouds. I love the patterns made by the tree branches against the sky and the patches of grass amongst the snow.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/50s, 26mm, hand held.

Sunday 7 February 2016

Bluebells under a hedgerow on a sunny, summer day.

This is an old one - from June 2013 - on one of my first walks with my DSLR at Hardcastle Crags. Sunshine and bluebells to cheer us up on a miserable, dark, wet winter evening!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/9, 1/15s, 36mm, hand held.

Saturday 6 February 2016

Illuminated staircases on London's south bank.

This one's from March last year, taken whilst walking along the south bank of the River Thames one evening. I can't remember exactly where this was, but I do remember waiting for someone to walk past one of the doorways to give some scale and motion to the otherwise graphic simplicity of the scene. I've converted to black and white to add to the simplicity.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/60s, 28mm, hand held.

Friday 5 February 2016

Nettles growing up through an old cattle grid.

This cattle grid is on the narrow track from Widdop Road to Walshaw Dean reservoir, alongside the tree plantation. A bit of an unusual subject, but great colours and lines. I took this in September last year.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/400s, 40mm, hand held.

Thursday 4 February 2016

Rippled reflections on the Rochdale canal

I took this in November last year, at the start of a walk from Sowerby Bridge up to Norland Moor, via Maple Dean Clough. This is a section of the canal between Sowerby Bridge and Copley. I was really drawn to the vivid colours and lovely patterns on both the wall and water.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/100s, 34mm, hand held.

Tuesday 2 February 2016

Blackpool's north pier at dusk.

I took this at the end of December last year. I didn't expect it to turn out well as 1) it was a really quick shot whilst my husband nipped into the arcade, 2) I had both dogs so was unable to adjust the camera settings, meaning the shot was under-exposed and 3) I had to hold the 2 struggling dogs in 1 hand whilst trying to steady the camera on the top of a railing with the other. Considering all that, I'm quite pleased with it!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/125s, 26mm (& lots of Lightroom noise reduction!)

Rocks and pebbles on Seahouses beach (2)

More of the lovely, colourful rocks on Seahouses beach, photographed on our last holiday there in August 2013. Like the rocky beach at Whitby, I could (and probably did) spend hours taking photos here!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/40s, 18mm, hand held.
