This is one of the few photos I've got left to process from Seahouses in August 2013. I remember having climbed up the dunes whilst my sons and husband played cricket on the beach. I found a quiet place and just sat and watched the waves for a while. There's nothing visually exciting about this photo (other than a large ship on the horizon if you zoom right in!) but I think it stirs the other senses - I can smell the sea, hear the waves and feel the warmth of the sun when I look at it.
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/100s, 29mm, hand held.
I select my favourite images from my walks and travels (photographed with my Nikon D3200) and post them here. I also add any notes of interest about the making of each image (either at the time or afterwards on the computer). I hope you enjoy looking at my photos and would love to see your comments. If you like a photo, please also share it via your social media using the buttons below each picture...thank you!

Weather-worn beach rocks (5)
I'm finally getting towards the end of my Northumberland photos from Aug 2013 - only a handful left to process now, and this is the last 'rocks' one. As before, I took this photo on Seahouses beach - brilliantly shaped and coloured rocks!
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/80s, 20mm, hand held.

Little shell on a rock on Seahouses beach
I took this one in August 2013 whilst on holiday at Seahouses, \Northumberland. I liked how the smooth, white shell contrasted against both the rough, dark rock and the blue sea and sky in the background.

Rocks and pebbles on Seahouses beach
Some more wonderfully shaped and textured rocks from Northumberland - photographed in August 2013. The only problem taking photos in this area is deciding what not to photograph!

Rainclouds over rockpools at Seahouses (2)
This is an alternative composition to the picture I posted 3rd Oct last year, both shot in August 2013. The first was a landscape version (to fit with the horizon); this is portrait (to fit with the more vertical pattern made by the rockpools). I think I prefer this one, although it still makes me a bit uncomfortable to crop a horizon so tightly!
If you zoom in (albeit a low-res file) you can see silhouettes of golfers on the far right horizon.
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/160s, 30mm, hand held.

Another image of the lovely patterns and contours in the rocks on Seahouses beach, Northumberland, from our holiday back in August 2013.

Dramatic sky over the sand dunes at Seahouses
This one's from our holiday to Seahouses, Northumberland in August 2013. These are St Aidan's dunes on the way up the beach towards Bamburgh. I love this stretch of beach - vast sands and vast skies, quite often with a dramatic mixture of clouds like this.

Lifebelt and ropes hanging on the harbour wall at Seahouses.
I took this one in August 2013. I really like the simple mixture of lines, colours and textures in every bit of the picture - the sky, wall, belt and ropes.
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/80s, grad filter for sky, 28mm, hand held.

Interesting rock on Seahouses beach
An interesting rock that I found on the beach at Seahouses, Northumberland, on holiday in August 2013. It looks like a little planet!

Ropes and a fishing boat at Seahouses harbour
Another one from Northumberland (August 2013) today. These ropes were piled on the harbour walls, next to the lobster pots. I crouched down to position the colourful fishing boat in the background, but chose an aperture that gave a shallow-ish depth of field to make sure the perspective remained.
When processing the photo I wondered whether I should have focused on the boat rather than the ropes. I suppose it depends which was my main subject - at the time I was more interested in the ropes than the boat. With hindsight, it would have been interesting to take 2 version of the photo and see which worked best. I think this version would win though - I think the ropes take up too high a percentage of the picture to be out of focus.
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/60s, 38mm, hand held.

Fishing/tourist boat at Seahouses harbour
This one's from our last Northumberland holiday in August 2013. This is one of the boats that takes visitors out to the Farne Islands. I assume they were all previously fishing boats that have now been converted to carry people instead. We've been on the same trip out to Longstone Island twice now and all loved it - I would quite happily go again on future holidays too.

Looking across the rockpools to the Farne Islands, Seahouses.
One from August 2013 at Seahouses, Northumberland. I love the colours and textures in the rocks and pools on the beach, and the shapes carved out by the wind and water. In this picture you can just make out the nearest of the Farne Islands on the central horizon.
I noticed in the raw file that the horizon was slightly curved, due to the wide angle lens, so I had to alter the distortion in Lightroom - the first time I've used that tool.
Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/125s, 18mm, hand held.

Weather-worn beach rocks (2)
These intriguing rocks are behind the rockpools on the beach at Seahouses, Northumberland, photographed during our holiday there in August 2013. The wind and water has carved fantastic shapes and contour lines into the rocks over the years, making them look like mini canyons on an ordnance survey map.
I reduced exposure and increased contrast in Lightroom.

Over the dunes between Bamburgh and Seahouses
I took this in August 2013 on our holidays. We'd spent a few hours on the beach and were heading back to the car on this path through St Aidan's dunes. I looked back after climbing over this wooden stile and thought it'd make a good picture. Typically, we then had to hang around for ages whilst other holiday-makers made their way (very slowly!) over the stile and safely out of my photo!
In Lightroom I increased overall contrast and reduced exposure in the sky with a graduated filter.

Rockpools, sparkling sea and swirling clouds at Seahouses
I loved the drama of the swirling clouds and the sparkle of the sun on the water in this scene. I took the picture in August 2013 from the rock pools to the South of the harbour at Seahouses.
In Lightroom, I just increased contrast and exposure very slightly.

Triptych of textures - stone, ripples & sparkles
A more abstract shot today! I took this photo in Seahouses last year - it's a close crop of the sea rippling up against the edge of a stone walkway. I liked the contrasting tones and textures between the stone and the water; and again between the section of water in the shade and the section with the sun glinting off its surface.
I cropped the raw photo to emphasise the 3 textural 'sections', then converted to monochrome and increased contrast and clarity.

Rope knotted around wooden boards on a boat
This is on one of the boats used for trips to the Farne Islands from Seahouses harbour. I took it on the way back from a visit to Longstone Island on our holiday there in August 2013. I think this rope was holding one of the life rings onto the side of the boat. This might be just me being odd, but the textures and shapes just appealed to me!
I increased contrast, reduced exposure slightly and converted to monochrome in Lightroom.

Weather-worn beach rocks
These blue/grey coloured rocks are on the beach at Seahouses, Northumberland. The wind and sea have worn them into complex ridges and swirls - lovely, intriguing patterns.
I cropped the original raw image and increased contrast to emphasise the shapes.

Lobster pots and boats at the harbour
This photo is from our last holiday to Seahouses, Northumberland, in August 2013. I was drawn to the colours and patterns of the lobster pots and ropes and framed the picture to include a couple of boats on the water. Although herring fishing is still done from the harbour, these particular boats have been converted to carry tourists out to the Farne Islands and Holy Island.
Post production I reduced highlights right down to take the glare off the water, reduced overall exposure very slightly and cropped the image to remove some cars parked behind the harbour wall.
