Fence, wall and reflections at Lighthazzles reservoir.

I've posted a photo of this wall in Lighthazzles reservoir before (see 18th May 2015), but from a different angle. I love the contrast between land and water, and the way the reflections give them a surreal floating effect.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Wooden doors on a stone barn.

I walked past this barn a few times on holiday in the Lake District this year and noticed how lovely the wood looked against the pale stone and roof. Each time, however, there was a big 4x4 parked right in front of them. (The barn is just beneath Catbells, on the road down to Stair.) Eventually, I decided to just photograph the bit I could see, above the vehicle. In Lightroom, I de-saturated everything but the doors, to help them stand out.

Tree framed by a crumbling wall.

I took this one at Meltham, whilst walking the route of my son's fell race, back in May this year. I just liked the way the wall created a natural frame for the tree.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/100s, 35mm, hand held.

Ivy overhanging the shell grotto at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

This is one of the installations at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, where we spent a couple of hours this afternoon. It's a little stone 'cave' built into the side of the lake, with shells set into the stones in the ceiling. I was more attracted to the lovely shapes of the ivy dangling over the doorway against the lake backdrop.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/320s, -1.3 step exp bias, 35mm, hand held.

A section of moorland footpath.

This is part of the path that runs across Widdop moor between Walshaw Dean reservoirs and Top Withens. I took the photo on a snowy day in January this year. The colours in the path stood out to me amidst the surrounding white of the snow.

Inside the ruins of Heptonstall's original 13th Century church (2)

Here's another shot of the lovely church ruins at Heptonstall, photographed in March this year. I think the bare branches of the tree under the arch fit perfectly with the tones and shapes of the ruins. You can find more information about them in my post of 30th March.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/2.2, 1/500s, 35mm, hand held.

Water flowing across stones on a Lake District fell path.

This is an upper section of the Wasdale valley path, featured in my photo posted on 24th May this year. At this point, the narrow, steep path was doubling as a little stream (not the easiest to walk down!). The light and colours in the water and stones really caught my attention.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/200s, 42mm, hand held.

Colourful section of the sea wall at Whitby.

I took this in January this year whilst walking along the beach at Whitby. I was drawn to the bright colours and the patterns and textures. Now, however, whilst posting this tonight, I have started wondering what has been pouring out of those little holes, making the dark stains, and thinking it might be best viewed from a distance!!

Little waterfall at the top of Jumble Hole Clough.

I took this one in April this year. This is near the top of the stream, above the old mill. I love the detail and colours in the bit where the water first passes over the top stones - I think it looks like a parting in smooth, golden-streaked hair.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/8s, 35mm, hand held (I think I balanced the camera on the side of the little wooden bridge I was standing on)

Overgrown mill ruins at Jumble Hole Clough

I did another new walk today - from Great Rock above Todmorden, down through Jumble Hole Clough, along the canal bank in the valley bottom, then back up the hillside from Eastwood. The fast-flowing stream down Jumble Hole Clough is stunning, but I'm not sure I've got any photos that really do it justice - I always felt like I needed to be on the other side of the stream. I did look for ways across at various points but (for once!) was sensible and didn't risk slipping off the mossy rocks and breaking bones or camera.

There are ruins of old textile mills at various points in the Clough - this is one of the smaller ones towards the bottom. It has a huge tree growing on top of it and a little waterfall in its side - hardly recognisable as a building any more.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/3.2, 1/125s, 35mm, hand held.

Late September afternoon on Morecambe Bay.

Another one from my afternoon in Morecambe last year - we called there after I'd had a helicopter flight from nearby Carnforth up to Ambleside and back. I got just as many photos at Morecambe as I did on the helicopter - the beach has a lovely mixture of textures and on that day the clouds were great too.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/250s, 20mm, hand held.

Inside the ruins of Heptonstall's original 13th Century church.

I took this on my Hebden Bridge - Heptonstall - Mytholm walk 2 weeks ago. This was the first time I'd visited Heptonstall's churches and graveyard and I was really impressed with their age, architecture, atmosphere and history. The old church in the photo was damaged by a gale in 1847 and a new church was built next to it in the same graveyard. The American poet Sylvia Plath (once married to locally born poet Ted Hughes) is buried in the newer part of the graveyard.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/2.2, 1/400s, 35mm, hand held.

Blue doors on an old textile mill

This is Shaw Lodge Mill on Boys Lane, in the bottom of the valley in central Halifax. I took the photo in April last year. I really liked the lines of the metal fire escape and the way the blue doors stood out from the stonework. To enhance this feature, when processing the raw file in Lightroom, I desaturated everything except the doors.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/100s, 24mm, hand held.

Reflections of trees between stones in a puddle

This is one of the first photos I took at Hardcastle Crags with my DSLR in June 2013. I'd intended photographing a little waterfall, but when I got there found that it had dried up due to a recent lack of rain. All that was left was this little puddle, so I set up my tripod above it and experimented. Close-up compositions had quite an abstract effect, made even more so by focusing on the reflections rather than the stones.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/9, 1.3s, 55mm, tripod.

Dry valley above Malham Cove

This one's from August this year, looking up the dry limestone valley (named Watlowes) above Malham Cove, leading up towards Malham Tarn. We met 4 highland cows in this valley - I think they're really cute but we did start to worry when one of them stomped purposefully towards us (we had our dogs on leads). Fortunately it lost interest as we got further away!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Mossy stone post in sun-lit woodland

This is at Hardcastle Crags - photographed in June 2013. The stone post is at the start of one of the paths around the woods - it's possibly either an old fence/gate post or just a way-marker. I wanted to capture the patterns, colours and textures on the post, but also liked the contrast against the really bright backdrop of trees.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/25s, 55mm, hand held.

Farm buildings near Portinscale, Lake District.

I took this one on a walk around the Newlands valley on our holiday to Keswick in August this year. I love how the sunlight hits the stone wall and the blue of the door mirrors the sky colour.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Vividly coloured reflections and sunlight in a shallow river

This is the River Hebden at Hardcastle Crags. The golden coloured areas are sunlight hitting the rocks and pebbles on the river bed; the rest of the colours are reflections of trees and blue skies above.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/125s, 48mm, hand held.

Lines, curves and shadows from an ornate Greenwich fence.

This fence runs alongside the Old Royal Naval College at Greenwich - I took the photo in March this year. I like the mixture of straight and curved lines from the fence, its shadows and stone edging and the great perspective of them collectively shrinking into the distance.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/160s, 32mm, hand held.

Lumb Hole waterfalls

These lovely waterfalls are at Crimsworth Dean, near Hebden Bridge, photographed on a walk along the valley in June this year. I've been trying different ways of photographing fast water - long and short exposures - and I think I prefer short. I like capturing the motion and being able to distinguish the separate droplets of water. This one isn't a particularly short exposure (1/80s), but still does the job.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/80s, 18mm.
