Autumn in the Luddenden valley.

This is one of my dad's favourite local views. I took the photo intentionally to frame and give to him as a birthday present. I chose an early morning in autumn (October 2015) to get the best light and colours - it was just before 9am when the shadow line from the hill I was standing on moved off the bottom of the shot, allowing me to get the composition I wanted. This image is made from a merge of 2 landscape images.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/50s, 48mm, tripod.

Saturday 30 January 2016

Thistle and grass against the sky at sunset.

This is taken at Malham Tarn - I was standing down by the side of the tarn, looking back up a steep slope, hence the angle of the shot. The sun was setting at the time, but the section of sky in this picture is actually opposite the sunset. I'm still not sure whether I like the thistle being in the picture, but I definitely like the colours and textures of the grass and the sky, so I'll leave it up to you to decide!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 1600, f/11, 1/125s, 40mm, hand held.

Summer fields and flowers in the Newlands valley, Keswick

This is the lovely, colourful view across the valley, taken from the path beside Newlands Beck. It was the first day of our holiday in August last year and we were very surprised and happy with the good weather, considering it had been raining for weeks beforehand.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/250s, 18mm, hand held.

Thursday 28 January 2016

Snow-covered trees on a foggy moor.

This is what Roils Head moor in Halifax looked like almost exactly a year ago (it probably looks more like a bog this year!). It was late afternoon and the low sun was almost breaking through the fog, giving these trees a subtle back-light.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/6.3, 1/100s, 22mm, hand held.

Whitby's east pier viewed from East Cliff Flats

Here's another one from this weekend at Whitby. We spent quite some time wandering around the Flats (rocks & pools) on Sunday morning and I'm sure I could spend lots more time there and never run out of photographic options! As it was, we had to retreat when the tide started to come in (really fast!).

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/8, 1/80s, 30mm, hand held.

Reflections under a bridge on the Rochdale canal.

I took this in April last year, under a road bridge on the Rochdale canal in Mytholmroyd. The original image included the view out of the other end of the bridge. The view itself was unimpressive (a factory!) so I cropped it to create an abstract of the reflections disappearing into the shadows under the bridge.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/80s, 24mm, hand held.

Early morning dog walkers on Whitby beach.

I haven't posted photos for the last few days because I've been away for the weekend in Whitby with my husband. It was our first time in Whitby and we both loved it. Unsurprisingly, I took loads of photos and I'm really excited about working my way through processing them. Here's one I did this afternoon - taken from the pier early Sunday morning, before most people had ventured out.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/8, 1/100s, 18mm, hand held.

Thursday 21 January 2016

Colourful mixture of plants and autumn foliage on the woodland floor.

I took this next to Maple Dean Clough on the hillside below Norland in November last year. I love how there's such a variety of colours, shapes and textures in such a small space.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/5.3, 1/100s, 44mm, hand held.

Wednesday 20 January 2016

Winter sunshine on Walshaw Dean middle reservoir, Widdop.

Here's another photo from my walk yesterday. This was on my way back, having reached Top Withens farm and retraced my steps. The sun came out for about 20 minutes and was actually quite warm, giving everything a lovely, colourful glow. You can just see the remaining snow on the top of the far moor, close to where I'd just been walking.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/250s, 18mm, hand held.

Tuesday 19 January 2016

Snow on the moors around the ruins of Top Withens farm.

Today I walked along a section of the Pennine Way from Widdop to the ruins of Top Withens farm, near Haworth. This is the farm that was thought to have been inspiration for the location of the Earnshaw house, Wuthering Heights, in Emily Bronte's novel. I've done this walk before, but always turned back before reaching the farm, not realising its significance. It was a perfect day for the walk today - in the 5 hours that I was out there was a real mixture of weather - fog, hazy sun, blue patches of sky, dark clouds and a short period of really bright, warm sunshine. Having done the walk before and knowing it was mostly vast expanses of bare moorland, I didn't expect to take many photos - happily, I was wrong!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/200s, 22mm, hand held.

Monday 18 January 2016

Little stream running through sunlit winter woodland.

This is the Caty Well Brook, just below the pub at Lower Saltonstall. I took the photo in February last year on a walk around the Luddenden valley. The sun was just about breaking through, lighting up sections of the mossy branches and water.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/60s, 30mm, hand held.

Sunday 17 January 2016

Bare trees overhanging a snowy lane.

I took this one today on a walk with my husband and the dogs. It's a narrow lane (called Great Edge) in Warley that has lovely views across the valley to Norland. Despite these views, I'm always drawn to this little copse of trees. There's some kind of tall mast in the middle of them, too, which makes the copse an easy landmark to spot when you're on any of the other surrounding hills.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/80s, 18mm, hand held.

Saturday 16 January 2016

Road through autumnal woodland.

I took this in early November 2014, on the main road through Hardcastle Crags. I love the rich mixture of colours.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/9, 1/125s, 30mm, hand held.

Friday 15 January 2016

Snow-covered trees and fields beyond.

This is at the far end of Roils Head Moor, looking out towards the fields around Mount Tabor. I took the photo almost exactly a year ago. I'm hoping for some more snow like this soon - had a slight flutter today but nothing's really stuck yet.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/11, 1/80s, 26mm, hand held.

Thursday 14 January 2016

Abstract view of the centre of a dandelion clock.

I took this in May 2014 in my garden. I've done quite a few different views of dandelion clocks - they're great to experiment with. This is the most abstract so far. I like how the cropped in view takes away perspective, but it looked a bit dull in monochrome so I played about with split toning. I suppose choice of colour is down to personal taste - this one works for me. I used very similar shades of green for both highlights and shadows, but much higher saturation for the highlights. I think it makes the outer edges look like exploding fireworks. It would be interesting to try mixing together lots of different colours in the same image - no doubt it's possible in Photoshop, but I haven't got the patience!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/5, 1/250s, 90mm, hand held.

Wednesday 13 January 2016

White cockerpoo dog with her teddy.

This is Kizzy, our 2 year-old cockerpoo, photographed last week just before heading to the groomers for a short back and sides! She looks like butter wouldn't melt...believe me, it would!!!

Tuesday 12 January 2016

Sunlit fields and fences beneath dark skies.

This is just off to the side of Hollingworth Lake, Littleborough. I took the photo last summer whilst on a walk with the kids. I love the curves of the fences and how the dark sky accentuates the sunlight.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/11, 1/250s, 34mm, hand held.

Monday 11 January 2016

A colourful and eclectic mix of buildings on Middlesex St, London.

I took this one in March last year. We were early for a meal at the Duck and Waffle restaurant in The Heron Tower and, having already visited the local markets, decided to wander around the streets in the area. I just had to take a photo of this scene - there's just so much in it: colours, different styles of buildings, signs, art, vehicles, reflections, shadows...!

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/80s, 24mm, hand held.

Sunday 10 January 2016

Looking towards Midgley from below Cold Edge Dams, Wainstalls.

I took this today, on a walk with my eldest son, exploring more of our local area. This is the furthest point I'd previously reached on this walk and I wanted to know what was beyond it. We went armed with the OS map and found our way along a few miles of very boggy (and snowy, further up!) paths until we reached Warley Moor reservoir. It was 'a bit brisk' up there but we could see for miles around and the clouds and lowering sun were beautiful.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/8, 1/100s, 32mm, hand held.

Saturday 9 January 2016

Late afternoon sunshine filtered through clouds at Morecambe seafront

I took this at the end of September last year. Morecambe Bay is full of photographic opportunities and I'm looking forward to going back sometime.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 400, f/18, 1/160s, 18mm, hand held.

Friday 8 January 2016

Web-like tangle of white branches over the River Hebden

This is from March last year at Hardcastle Crags. Don't know if this tree was dead or just in its leafless winter state, but it contrasted beautifully against the surrounding earth tones.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 200, f/9, 1/60s, 22mm, hand held.

Thursday 7 January 2016

Blue doors on an old textile mill

This is Shaw Lodge Mill on Boys Lane, in the bottom of the valley in central Halifax. I took the photo in April last year. I really liked the lines of the metal fire escape and the way the blue doors stood out from the stonework. To enhance this feature, when processing the raw file in Lightroom, I desaturated everything except the doors.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/10, 1/100s, 24mm, hand held.

Wednesday 6 January 2016

Purple and white mesembryanthemum flower

I took this photo of a mesembryanthemum (one of my favourite flowers) in my garden in July 2014.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/3.5, 1/800s, 90mm, hand held.

Tuesday 5 January 2016

Man-made structures on the Lancashire moors

I don't know what these little brick structures are - they're on the moors between Blackstone Edge and Lighthazzles reservoirs, above Littleborough. I'm sure this will divide opinion, but I really like their colours and shapes - their state of disrepair also appeals to my liking for 'falling-down' buildings. I also like that this picture includes the pylons - more man-made structures that line our moors and divide opinion.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/60s, 18mm, hand held.

Monday 4 January 2016

Gull Crag cliffs and Lilburn Tower at Dunstanburgh Castle

I took this whilst on holiday in Northumberland in August 2013. This is on the north-eastern edge of the 14th century castle's grounds. As the name suggests, these cliffs are full of gulls - perched, swooping around and making lots of noise.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/50s, 18mm, hand held.

Sunday 3 January 2016

Bare tree trunks in foggy Whinlatter Forest.

My husband and I went for a walk at Whinlatter Forest with the dogs on this damp morning during our holiday to Keswick in August last year (the kids were at an adventure centre for the day). I took my tripod intending to get exactly this type of shot, as the clouds were low on the hills, creating atmospheric, foggy conditions. This type of light also seemed to make the greens and russets on the ground and tree trunks even more vivid.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 2.5s, 48mm, tripod.

Saturday 2 January 2016

Across the Calder valley from the approach to Stoodley Pike

This is from November 2014, taken on a walk from Hebden Bridge to Stoodley Pike, Todmorden. The photo looks across the valley around the Eastwood area. I love the colours and the quality of the mid afternoon autumn light.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/7.1, 1/125s, 22mm, hand held.

Friday 1 January 2016

Little sheep above Cragg Vale, Mytholmroyd.

Happy new year everyone!

My friend and I had just climbed up the valley side from the Hinchliffe Arms pub when we passed this little sheep in June this year. It was posing perfectly against the shadowy valley of Cragg Vale so I took a quick photo. We then carried on to walk around Withens Clough reservoir and back.

Camera/lens settings: ISO 100, f/11, 1/160s, 45mm, hand held.
